We have a great selection of 7.62X39 Ammunition in-stock and ready to ship. The 7.62 is a pretty great round. Kind of a 308 short. With good hunting ammunition, the 7.62X39 is a very effective round on medium sized game. Because of the worldwide popularity of the SKS rifles, AK-47 style rifles, the Ruger Mini 30 and a few others, the ammunition is typically easy to find and affordable which makes it a great caliber for target shooting with a range of about 400yds or longer.
The 7.62x39mm commonly referred to as 7.62 Russian was designed during WWII. It was first used in the Russian RPD rifle. Due to the worldwide proliferation of SKS rifles and after the war the AK-47 style rifles, the 7.62x39 round is used by both military and civilians worldwide. This functions well in temps −50 to 50 °C (−58 to 122 °F) which makes it very useful in nearly any condition. The design was influenced by developments in other countries in particular, the German Mkb 42(H) and the M1 Carbine.
The AK-47 which is the world's most widespread military style rifle was designed specifically for this cartridge. The cartridge remained the Soviet standard until the 1970s. It was eventually replaced in Russian service by a caliber very similar to the 5.56mm NATO round, the 5.45×39mm cartridge. 5.45×39mm cartridge is still in use by the current-issue AK-74 and its variants.
Because of it's worldwide popularity, the 7.62X39 is still very inexpensive to shoot and is normally readily available from a handful of manufacturers. The 7.62 Russian is perhaps the most common intermediate rifle cartridge that is in use today.
The 7.62X39mm cartridge uses a .310 diameter bullet which is 2 thousandths of an inch larger in diameter than a .308 caliber bullet commonly used in 308 Winchester or 7.62x51mm NATO. The standard bullet weight is 123 grains but it is possible to shoot a variety of bullet weights given the right barrel twist.
Besides an AK-47 print weapon, AR-15's can be chambered in 7.62X39 but this requires using a different magazine, bolt and barrel. There are also several manufactures who produce sporting rifles in 7.62X39mm.
